Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will be desperate for a turnaround when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in a crucial IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium here on Wednesday, with their campaign hanging by a thread.
It has been a difficult season so far for Mumbai. With five defeats in their first seven matches, including a record 103-run loss to Chennai Super Kings, they find themselves near the bottom of the table with very little margin for error. Despite boasting several players from India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, the team has struggled to put together consistent performances, especially from their senior players.

Captain Hardik Pandya has not been able to lead from the front, contributing only modestly with both bat and ball so far. Suryakumar Yadav, usually one of the most dependable batters in the format, has also failed to hit top gear this season. At the same time, Jasprit Bumrah has been unusually quiet by his own high standards. Traditionally used as a middle-overs enforcer and death-over specialist, Bumrah has been pushed to take the new ball in recent matches due to the lack of impact from the rest of the pace attack.
That lack of penetration has been a recurring issue. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have not been able to provide early breakthroughs, allowing opposition teams to dominate the powerplay phase. More often than not, Mumbai have been on the back foot early in games, with their bowlers struggling to control the flow of runs or pick up timely wickets.
There have been a few positives, though. Tilak Varma stood out with a maiden IPL century against Gujarat Titans, which helped Mumbai snap a four-match losing streak. However, that momentum was short-lived as the heavy defeat to Chennai once again derailed their campaign.
Injuries and team changes have added to their challenges. The absence of Rohit Sharma due to a hamstring issue has left a significant void at the top of the order, and the players who have stepped in have not been able to replicate his impact. His availability for this match remains uncertain. The squad has also had to adjust its balance, with Mitchell Santner ruled out and replaced by Keshav Maharaj, while it is yet to be seen whether Will Jacks gets an opportunity in the playing XI despite having done well in similar conditions previously.
On the other side, Sunrisers Hyderabad come into the contest with a stronger sense of momentum and belief. They will be confident of ending their recent losing run against Mumbai, especially given their current form and position on the table. A comprehensive win over Rajasthan Royals has boosted their confidence heading into this fixture.
At the top of the order, Abhishek Sharma has been in outstanding form, rediscovering his rhythm after a relatively quiet T20 World Cup campaign. His consistency and aggressive approach have been key for Hyderabad. He has also been well supported by Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen, both of whom have delivered impactful performances with the bat this season.
However, there will be expectations from Travis Head to contribute more significantly, as he has not yet produced the kind of performances he is known for in the IPL. His form could be an important factor as Hyderabad look to strengthen their push towards the playoffs.
The return of captain Pat Cummins has added further balance to the side. Even though his recent outing came in a high-scoring match, his presence and leadership are key assets for Hyderabad as they continue their campaign.
